Think about what it is you want your tattoo to do.  Are you looking to commemorate an event?  A death? A celebration? A person?  Or is this just a tattoo for fun?  (Yes, it’s okay to get a tattoo just because you want to!)

If you think astrology is a fringe science, think again. It’s actually one of the original sciences and was once nearly inseparable from astronomy. Our ancestors gazed at the cosmos and saw order in the infinite chaos, leading to the discovery of the constellations. And as you may already know, the constellations are the basis for the signs of the zodiac.

A lot of women admire tattoos, but they would never consider getting one themselves. Why is that? Is it because they’re afraid of going under the needle? Yes, sometimes fear of the possible pain is a big factor, as well as the fear of contracting HIV or hepatitis C from improperly sterilized equipment.

Then there’s that old chestnut called “social stigma”. As tattoos explode in popularity, they are becoming more accepted in society. However, there was a time when body ink was strictly the domain of less than savory characters. Today, tats are moving far beyond any particular culture or social status. Tribal armband tattoos usually don’t represent any particular culture.  The designs consist of bold, solid-colored patterns, with arcing lines that have an organic feel.  Based in spirit on ancient tattooing traditions from around the world, tribal-style designs often have no specific meaning of their own. 

Like Celtic designs, tribal shapes make good armbands because the design can be continuous, looking just as good from the side as from the front.  Tribal tats have become very common, leading some enthusiasts to seek other styles.

There are several different types of symbols that are typical in Celtic culture. One of the most important is the Celtic knot, a design made of interwoven lines and designs that are representative of stories or a specific part of Celtic culture. Celtic knots and bands can be seen on many different tapestries and artwork from early on in the Middle Ages (and even before), and some early tattoos seen on the Celts and the Picts were created from these knots. Archeologists have found that there are eight elementary knots that create the rest of the patterns found in Celtic knotwork. Some of these knots are formed into a straight line, creating a band, while others adorn mystical shapes like the triangle and circle. Besides the obvious religious connotations of these shapes, there is not believed to be any mystical or religious meaning to just the Celtic knots themselves.

Another common symbol is the Celtic cross. This cross, which is formed like a lowercase “t” with a circle around the arms, predates the beginning of Christianity in the United Kingdom, although it was eventually co-opted by Christians who wanted to use the symbol to represent Christ. This cross is also a popular choice for tattoos.
